- Use a pencil to mark the lines on the drywall, if necessary.
- Cut the drywall using your utility knife, following along with any marks you made earlier.
- Attach the wallboard to its frame with nails, making sure not to bend or break them during installation.
Step 4: Attach the drywall to another side of the frame
With the frame in place, it’s time to attach drywall.
To do this, grab your drill/driver and attach a screw gun bit. Use the level to make sure your frame is straight. Attach the drywall to one side of the frame by driving screws through each hole in the wall into each stud on that side of the frame using 1-1/2″ long screws. You may have noticed that some of your studs were shorter than 1-1/2″. That’s okay. Just use a pencil to mark where you want your screw holes on those shorter studs so that when you’re hanging up more drywall, it will be level with everything else (this step is also important if there was more than one layer of flooring before).
Step 5: Tape, mud, sand, and paint
After your base coats have dried, tape the seams between drywall panels with 3/4-inch green tape. Apply a thin layer of joint compound over the edges of each seam using a flat trowel (also called a float). Let that dry overnight; then apply another coat of joint compound to cover any imperfections in texture or color. This can get messy. Use mastic knives or your fingers to smooth out any ridges on top of each seam before painting.
