Construction of the White House began with a plan outlined by George Washington in 1792 and was completed during Thomas Jefferson’s term (1801–1809). The main house was built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia Creek sandstone, with a hipped roof surmounted by a balustrade and a small dome above it in the center of the structure. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he added low colonnades on each wing that concealed stables and storage. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by British troops who burned much of Washington, including the White House; it was partially reconstructed by 1817.
The interior was rebuilt from 1817 to 1818 by James Hoban, who later designed the Oval Office carried out under President Theodore Roosevelt from 1902 to 1909. In 1829, Andrew Jackson oversaw a major renovation of the entire complex.

The foundation is made up of three different parts that support the rest of the structure: a stone-filled footing, a brickwork foundation, and a stone masonry superstructure. The stone-filled footing is located at the bottom of the foundation and acts as an anchor for all other parts of the White House.

In fact, real estate is actually one area where building costs have gone down over time; construction companies say that new homes built today cost less than half as much as what was spent on construction materials during George Washington’s presidency ($412 million).
