If you have some pallets lying around in your garage or storage shed, then read on to find out how you can smartly use them as a material for your next backyard project.
The great thing about this project is that it’s easy to do, and you can complete it in a single weekend. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as you watch your deck come together, and have a satisfying space to enjoy for years to come.
Choose the location.
Now that you have the pallets, you need to choose a location for your deck. The first step is to choose a location that is level, dry and well-drained. Make sure the area is large enough to accommodate the deck. The deck should be placed in a sunny location. The ideal deck site is not in the shade or too close to trees or large bushes (which can cause problems with termites). Also make sure that there are no standing water on the site as it will cause wood rot over time. The area should be clear of any debris or trash as this could be harmful for your pets/children playing around it later on down the road when they decide to use it as an obstacle course.
Clear the area.
Clear the area of any obstacles. Make sure you have plenty of space for your deck and that it will be stable, safe, and accessible. Your pallet deck should be located in an area that is away from active activity so that no one trips over it. The location should also be sunny enough to provide shade during hot days but shaded from rain during rainy days (or at least have some type of roof). It’s also important to make sure there are no power lines nearby or other potential hazards before beginning construction on your new DIY pallet deck project.

Remove nails and screws, sand the wood, pre-drill holes, apply wood sealer, stain the wood and apply a finish to it. This can be done either with a brush or sprayer. When cutting the pallets, place your blade slightly toward the top of each board so that you don’t have to worry about hitting nails below (you may need to take extra care when cutting across sharp edges). If you don’t want to use pallet boards at all—or if they aren’t available in good condition—you can tear up old decking boards instead.
Lay down the wood flooring.
Lay the wood flooring down in a pattern. You can use any pattern you like, but we recommend keeping it simple and symmetrical so that your pallet deck is balanced and easy to navigate.
Make sure the wood flooring is level. Using a rubber mallet, hammer each piece of wood into place until they are all level with each other. Use a level to ensure that every piece of wood is properly aligned.
Hammer together pieces as needed so that there are no gaps or loose ends sticking out from under the decking boards (this will make it easier to attach them later). Carefully hammer together any loose ends so that your pallets are complete and sturdy enough for people to walk on without falling through them! We recommend using screws instead of nails because they’re easier for us humans when we need something heavy moved around quickly; however you may also choose nails if desired.
Attach 2×4 frames to pallet deck structure.
This step is where the 2×4 frames are attached to the pallet deck structure. The 2x4s should be level, spaced evenly, and attached to the pallet deck frame with screws. You may need to cut some of your 2x4s to fit depending on how long your wood is or if you have treated lumber that has been cut down in size from 12 feet long pieces.
You will want to paint all of this before attaching it together so that there are no splinters or cracks in any part of it that could cause injury while you are playing with it later on. You can also apply a sealant such as polyurethane or a stain if desired so that your platform does not warp and crack over time due to harsh weather conditions like rain or snowfall during winter months when temperatures drop below freezing temperatures at night causing condensation inside these wooden slats making them expand slightly each day which causes cracks into which water can seep into leading over time even after regaining its shape after being dried out again overnight between days where they will still show signs of having been damaged because they were never fully cured when first made

The border frame is the framing that surrounds your deck and provides the surface for attaching decking boards. We’ll be using 2x4s for this. Each side should measure about 4 feet wide by 8 feet long (48 inches by 96 inches), with a joist every 12 inches on center. If you don’t have access to a table saw, use a hammer and chisel to remove any splinters from the ends of each board before cutting them to length with your jigsaw or circular saw — you can always sand these down later if necessary.
Once all four sides are cut, place them against each other so they form an outline around your pallet deck frame, leaving enough room between them so that they won’t collide when we put pressure on them during construction (about 6 inches on either side). Once they’re in position, drill two pilot holes through each corner of each piece into their adjacent pieces (place one hole right above an end piece’s notch). Next attach one end of each piece together using 2″ #10 woodscrews driven into these holes; then continue along until all corners are connected together tightly enough that there won’t be any gaps between them when we add pressure later on.
Drill the 2x4s of the border frame into place.
You’ll want to drill pilot holes for the screws to avoid splitting or cracking your wood. To do this, use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screw head, but big enough so it doesn’t slip through. If you have an electric drill with variable speed settings, set it on a slow setting and make sure not to over-tighten as this can damage your piece of wood.
When drilling into metal sheets like I did here in my deck plans (see below), it’s important not to use too much force because they tend to be thinner than regular lumber and therefore more susceptible to splitting if drilled improperly with excessive force.
Attach the decking boards to the pallet deck frame.
The decking boards should be attached to the pallet deck frame using screws. Use a power drill and a power screwdriver bit to secure them in place.
- Use a drill, not nails or hammers. The best way to use these types of materials is by drilling holes through them and then inserting screws through those holes so that they can be secured onto other pieces of wood.
- Don’t try using a hammer or screwdriver for this step! Although this may seem like an obvious piece of advice, it’s very easy for people unfamiliar with tools and proper use methods to make mistakes like this one when completing DIY projects at home-and your safety is important!
