I built this wall bench a few weeks ago and it’s totally changed our mudroom. We were on the hunt for some extra seating, but we needed something that was narrow enough to fit in between two doors. So we built this bench out of wood instead. For less than $100, you can build yourself a sturdy storage bench that will last you years to come! And once you’re done, you’ll have a great place to stash spare blankets and pillows.
Cut four pieces of 2×2 that are 15 inches long.
- Cut four pieces of 2×2 that are 15 inches long.
- Use a miter saw to make the cuts.
- Cut the pieces to be 15 inches long.
- Use a tape measure to determine the length for each cut, and label each piece as you cut them (one, two, three and four), so that you can keep track of which ones are which when it comes time to assemble the bench. When using this method with two or more people, there will be no confusion about what piece goes where! You may also choose to draw lines on each piece before cutting with a pencil so that they won’t slip around while being handled by several people at once
Cut the top and bottom plywood pieces to be 16 inches long.
Cut the top and bottom plywood pieces to be 16 inches long.
If you have a miter saw, this is your best option for cutting the plywood. If you don’t have a miter saw, however, it’s not difficult to cut the plywood on your own with any hand saw (a jigsaw or table saw works well) or circular saw.
Mark lines at 2 inches in from each edge on both sides of these two pieces of wood so that they will be flush with their edges when assembled later in this project.
Cut two 2x2s to be 26 inches long.
- Using a miter saw, cut two 2x2s to be 26 inches long.
- Using a drill and 1½ inch pocket hole screws, make holes in each end of the boards as shown in the picture so that they can easily be connected together with these screws later on (see our article about how to use pocket hole screws for more details). Be sure to make sure that your wood is level before drilling any holes! This will keep things from being crooked when you put everything together later on.
- Sand both sides of each piece until smooth; this will give them a nicer finish and make it easier to stain or paint them later on if you want to change up the color scheme in your room
Create a 30-inch by 30-inch square with the four 15-inch pieces.
To make sure the wood is square, use a level to ensure that the pieces are level, or use the measurement method I mentioned earlier.
Once you’ve cut all four pieces and they’re the same size, align two of them so that they form a 90-degree angle when placed on top of one another. This will form a right angle shape with two sides measuring 30 inches each and two sides measuring 15 inches each.
Attach these two pieces with wood glue and 1-inch screws through every other hole (there will be 12 holes) in order to create a solid wall bench base.
Attach the bottom of the square to one end of the plywood, with the 15-inch pieces positioned on top of one another.
To attach the bottom of the square to one end of the plywood, position 15-inch pieces on top of one another. Drill four pocket holes into each plywood piece, then secure with screws.
Attach remaining 26-inch pieces to each side with pocket screws.
Attach a 26-inch piece to each side at about 20 inches from the edge.
Attach a 26-inch piece to each side at about 20 inches from the edge.
Drill four pocket holes into each side piece. Then, attach them to the sides with 1-1/4-inch pocket screws.
Attach the 26-inch piece to each side with pocket screws.
Drill four pocket holes into each plywood piece and attach a remaining 26-inch piece to each side with pocket screws, so that the legs are attached to both ends of the plywood.
The bench will be built using pocket holes, which are small indentations in the wood that form a strong connection that can hold up over time. To make a pocket hole, you’ll want to use a drill bit with an appropriate-sized screw for your wood type. If you’re not sure what kind of wood you’re working with, be sure to test out each type before drilling any holes into it
For an easy DIY project, build this wall bench out of wood for extra seating in your home or for storage.
When it comes to building a bench for storage, you can easily add a cushion for extra comfort. You may also want to add hooks or shelves for storage. Paint the wood before you attach it to your wall so that it matches your decor.
For this project, you will need:
Wood (2x4s work great)
Table saw or circular saw
Hammer and nails (or screws)
Safety goggles and gloves (to protect yourself from splinters)
Drill
Conclusion
In about a day, you can build this wall bench for extra seating or storage. (You could even use it as a side table). It’s easy to customize by choosing from different color schemes and types of wood, making it an inexpensive way to add a nice looking piece of furniture to any room in your home.
