Want to give a room in your home a rustic, farmhouse look? The easiest and most affordable way to do this is by creating a DIY wood accent wall in your space. Adding an accent wall is one of the best ways to transform the look of your room, and the good news is that you can create one with wood, even if you don’t have any woodworking or carpentry experience
Step 1 – Locate the studs on the wall.
To make sure you can hang your wood on the wall, you need to find the studs. To do this, you will use a stud finder or hammer.
- If you have a stud finder: simply put it against the wall and push it around until it beeps. This means that there is a stud behind the drywall (the middle of the wall). Then, mark this spot with a pencil so that when you drill into it later, your screw doesn’t go through too far and end up in another room
- If using a hammer: once again, place your ear near the wall and gently tap each section until you hear a solid sounding thunking sound; that’s where one of those pesky studs is hiding out! Once found, mark it with some tape so that when we start drilling into our wood later on down this tutorial journey… we don’t accidentally hit anything else besides what we want (which would be bad).
Step 2 – Work with a designer to create your design.
Assemble a team that includes a designer to help you with the design, color scheme, layout and materials. The designer will be able to determine the correct size and color of wood for your accent wall. They can also help you with budgeting by giving advice on how much each piece of wood should cost so that you are not overspending on one single piece of furniture or art work.
If possible involve yourself in the process by visiting local lumberyards or wood shops where they sell unfinished pieces of wood. This way if there are any problems such as knots or cracks in the wood it would be easier for them to replace those pieces rather than trying to patch them up later down the road when it becomes too difficult because they may need some sort of glue or filler material which will probably cost more money than just buying another piece altogether
Step 3 – Draw your design onto your wall.
- Use a pencil to draw your design onto the wall.
- Use a ruler to help you draw straight lines, or if you think that drawing straight lines is too easy for you, use one of those fancy laser levels that you can find at any good home improvement store and they will do all the work for you! Even better: use both! You can never have too many tools in your toolbox (or even on your walls).
- Make sure that when everything is said and done, it’s perfectly straight by using some sort of device – whether it be a chalk line or paint roller – to make sure every inch of this project has been measured out correctly beforehand so that once we start painting those beautiful colors on top of them they’ll be ready for prime time (and not crooked whatsoever)
Step 4 – Cut the wood using a table saw.
Once you’ve cut the wood using a table saw, it’s time to make your cuts. You may want to use a circular saw for this step, but in our opinion, the table saw is better suited for this task. Make sure that your blade is sharp and use a guide (a special piece of metal that helps you make straight cuts) so that you can create straight lines on all sides of each board.
Step 5 – Nail the wood onto your wall.
Now, it’s time to nail the wood onto your wall. Make sure that you hammer in at least two nails on each piece of wood so they will stay firmly in place. Nail them into studs and make sure that they are straight using a level (you can also use another piece of scrap wood as a guide).
Once again, you’ll want to use painter’s tape or masking tape to cover up any trim work around your window or door frames because this may get slightly damaged during construction.

Step 6 – Fill in the gaps with wood filler.
- Fill in any gaps and holes with wood filler.
- Use a putty knife to apply the wood filler over the area, then let it dry for at least 24 hours.
- Sand the wall with a sanding block or orbital sander to smooth out any uneven areas that were created while filling in holes and gaps.
- Paint over your accent wall with paint of your choice
Step 7 – Prime and paint the wall.
Once the wood is secured to the wall and primed, you can begin painting. There are a few different ways to do this. You can use a paintbrush, roller or sprayer for an even finish to ensure it looks great.
- Paint brush: For small projects or those with delicate details like arches or moldings, using a paint brush is recommended. It’s also great for filling in any gaps between boards when you’re painting an accent wall from scratch. Just remember to keep your strokes smooth so they blend well together
- Roller: Rolling is another option if you want something more uniform than brushing on every piece individually (or if there aren’t too many pieces). Rollers are great for large surfaces but might require more coats than brushes due to their larger surface area collecting excess paint rather than distributing it evenly over each small square inch of wood surface area like brushes do when used properly
